EyeOfSauron Designs

cosplayer from Austria who is a professional cosplayer for more than 5 years.

He is known for the variety of his cosplays and his inspiration for cosplay comes from very different areas – from Disney movies to Marvel superheroes.

Please introduce yourself – what’s your cosplay name, where are you from, how long have you been cosplaying?

Hey! My name Cosplay name is EyeofSauronDesigns, and I’m from Austria! I’ve been cosplaying for 5 years now (although I made my costume before that, see next answer).

How did you start cosplaying? What was you first costume?

I’ve started cosplay before I even knew what cosplay was. When I first saw the first iron man movie I felt like it would be cool to have a costume like that, then I researched on the internet and found other people doing it. My first costume was actually a fail because I started out with resin and pepakura, and halfway in I realized that it would be too expensive. So I switched to foam and that’s how I finished my first costume.

Do you have your favorite costume? If yes – what is it and why?

It’s kind of hard to pick a favorite costume, because I usually like the costume I’m currently working on best, because I have more knowledge and skills than before. So currently I would say Batman is my favorite, because who doesn’t want to be Batman 😉

What part of this hobby/life style do you like the most? Why?

I love crafting, actually more than wearing the costumes. I would say that I’m just a grown up child, who finally gets to play with toys that weren’t possible when I was a kid. I am also lucky enough to have the chance to go to cons around the world and meet amazing people, both cosplayers and fans of all kinds of things. It always amazes me, when people come and tell me their stories.

Why cosplay is important for you?

Cosplay is a good equalizer to regular life. You get to have an office job for the week, and then you get to do creative stuff in your free time, and also get to be your favorite superhero/anime character etc. on the weekend.
It’s also a very inclusive hobby and there’s no right or wrong. There’s no age limit, no restrictions, anyone can be whoever they want. That’s great to me.

How do you choose characters that you cosplay?

My main go to character choice is the design. If I see something and immediately love the design of it, I want to cosplay it. But this can come from anywhere. Either I play a game and love the art style, see a movie and love the
costumes, or just see a picture on the internet, if the design clicks with me, I want to make it.

How much time do you usually spend on one costume? What was the longest time you spent on one costume and which costume it was?

That’s very different for each costume. For example, I finished Lucky Luke in a week, and on batman, I’ve been working for 8 months now, and it’s still not quite finished. That’s also my longest ongoing project (although I started building my master chief costume 4 years ago and only finished it this year, but only because I was too lazy to paint it 🙂

What would you consider to be the biggest achievement in you cosplay carrier?

Im would say winning the Stan Winston School Cosplay contest. While I’ve been in multiple other contests, this one was quite different, because it was rated by Hollywood professionals. And since I’m really impressed by the work those people do on film and TV shows, this was a big deal to me. I’ve also had the honor to represent Blizzard for a few events, which was amazing to me because they picked me out of all the great Blizzard cosplayers.

Do you have any funny stories or accidents related to cosplay?

Traveling with big costumes with lots of pieces, I sometimes forget something at home. When I went to Hungary for Mondocon, I forgot a piece of the All might wig, and I was super pissed, because without it, the costume was
pointless. We arrived at 9 in the Evening, and then I decided to go find materials to make a replacement, in a city I’ve never been too, with most shops already closed, and a different currency that I didn’t have on me. I still managed to build a replacement, which is now hanging in my living room to remind me that I should double and triple check if I’ve packed everything before I leave.

What would you say for people who thinks that cosplay is pointless waste of time and money?

As a smarter person than me once said: money is not wasted if you spend it on something you love. You don’t cosplay to satisfy other people, you do it for yourself, because you love doing it. If your priority is to impress and satisfy other people, you should maybe check your priorities.

What would you advice or whish for people who want to start cosplaying, but for unknown reasons are afraid or just don’t know where to start?

Go for it! Why not do something you want to do out of fear to upset someone. Life is too short to always worry about what other people think of you. You only get one life, and you should do with it what you want. If that is cosplay, go to a con, talk to people, ask them how they made something, message cosplayers for tips and look at tutorials! There’s no wrong way of cosplaying, do it in a way you want to, and have fun doing it!

Is there anything else you would like to say?

I can’t wait to meet all you awesome people, and im super excited to come! I’ve never been to Lithuania and I can’t wait to see your beautiful country! See you at Comic Con Baltics!
